Right Way to Teach

Aṅguttara Nikāya 107 (V, 159)

One should set up in oneself five standards if one is to teach the Dharma.

  • I shall give a gradual discourse
  • I shall give a well reasoned discourse
  • Moved by sympathy I shall speak
  • Not for the sake of worldly advantage shall I speak
  • Without extolling myself or disparaging others I shall speak

NB: An alternative translation of the fifth standard above is: “Without alluding to myself or others”
