raincoat

raincoat poem, Jimi Hendrix, Kathy Etchingham, Hughie's guitar solo, Snapdragon Circus 1991

I thought I’d achieve escape velocity
I’d be so fast
so bright
no rain would ever soak into me
I’d be Jimi Hendrix
and some kind of brilliance
would be my raincoat

what a fantasy
that sickness and aging
wouldn’t get me
like it does
all living things

I’ll be 60 in the Spring
it’s time to turn away
from the world
there’s nothing here for me
but I don’t want to turn
ok I can’t stop my birthday
but surely
it’s not too late for a cuddle?
